"We Were Liars" by E. Lockhart

     ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 stars

So going into this book, I didn't know very much about it. I knew it was super popular and a lot of my friends enjoyed it, but to be completely honest with you, I thought it was a WW2 book (I actually got it mixed up with the book "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand, I have no idea why so don't ask). So I clearly was going into this completely blind, because the blurb on the back didn't give me much.

"Life feels beautiful that day.

The four of us Liars, we have always been.

    We always will be.

No matter what happens as we go to college, grow old, build lives for ourselves... No matter where we go, we will always be able to line up on the roof of Cuddledown and gaze at the sea.

The island is ours. Here, in some ways we are young forever."

Okay, just to be clear I am very middle of the road with this book. I didn't hate it (even though reading through reviews on Goodreads, it looks like quite a few people did), but I didn't think it was the best thing I have ever read. Let's break it down a bit.

Some aspects of this book that I loved: I thought that the characters were unique and very fleshed out, as I read the book I found that I felt like I knew the characters personally, especially the main character, Cadence. Although she goes by her nickname most of the time, Cady. Throughout the book you get a very in depth look into Cady's, mind. One of the main story lines of the book is that Cady's family goes to an island that her grandparents own, every summer; but one summer there's an accident that leaves Cady with terrible migraines and a faulty memory, so the glances into her mind are super interesting and help you get to know her. I also loved that the book started with not only a map of the island but a family tree, I always think it's fun when you get to see a drawn map of a location from the book but the family tree was a nice little addition that I hadn't expected.

Some aspects of this book that I wasn't a huge fan of: as I was reading, I found it very hard to get into the book due to to the unique style of writing. The author was very descriptive and sometimes her sentences were super choppy and odd. It made the book feel kind of unnatural and it was hard for me to fully immerse myself into the book. I also wish that the title had been explained in the book. While reading the book I kept waiting for the title to make sense to me but it never did. I did, however, learn that the author had a chapter where the title was explained but she cut it. So I guess we'll never know.

All in all, I did like this book. I thought it was well done and (obviously no spoilers) the plot twist at the end got me bad, even if I did sit and try to convince myself that I saw it coming. So if you love a book that has a twist and will make you cry, this is the book.
